Upper Mustang was completely closed to foreigners until 1992 and still requires a special restricted area permit (USD 500 per person per 10 days). The ancient Buddhist kingdom of Lo Manthang — with its whitewashed walled city, 600-year-old monasteries, and cave dwellings carved into red cliff faces — offers a glimpse of Tibetan culture that has been lost inside Tibet itself.
Arrive TIA. Hotel and welcome dinner.
Sightseeing: Pashupatinath, Boudhanath. Afternoon: Restricted Area Permit processing (same day).
Fly or drive to Pokhara.
Fly to Jomsom (20 min over Kali Gandaki gorge). Trek to Kagbeni — a walled medieval village where the Mustang restricted area begins.
Enter the Upper Mustang restricted zone. Trek through completely arid terrain — narrow canyons, eroded badlands.
Trek over Taklam La Pass (3,624m) with panoramic views of the Tibetan plateau.
Trek past ancient cave settlements. Cross Nyi La (4,010m). Descend to Ghami with its famous long mani wall.
Trek to Tsarang — a village dominated by a 14th-century red monastery perched dramatically on a cliff.
Trek to Lo Manthang — the walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. Enter through the single eastern gate. Explore the Royal Palace and Thubchen Gompa (15th century).
Full day in Lo Manthang. Morning: visit the Namgyal Gompa. Afternoon: jeep excursion to Chhoser — hundreds of ancient sky caves carved 50m up in sheer red cliffs.
Alternative return route via the cliff-face monasteries of Drakmar.
Trek back south through Mustang's extraordinary landscape.
Continue south through the canyon terrain.
Return to Kagbeni. Afternoon excursion to Muktinath Temple (3,800m).
Trek to Jomsom. Fly to Pokhara. Celebration dinner lakeside.
Sarangkot sunrise, city tour, Davis Falls, Peace Pagoda.
Return to Kathmandu.
Optional Bhaktapur or Pashupatinath visit. Shopping.
Breakfast. Airport transfer. The Forbidden Kingdom visited!
