GANDEN: Fullday Excursion to Ganden Monastery (4300 M) 60 km from Lhasa, scenically overlooking the Kyi Chu Valley . The Ganden Monestary is one of the three largest monasteries as well as the first of six monasteries of the Gelug sect. Ganden literally “love and pleasure” was first built in early 15th century by Tsongkapa, the founder of the Geluga sect, who presided over its construction. This sect also became known as the Yellow Hat sect, as its disciples were always wearing yellow hats. This order went on to become the biggest sect in Tibetan Buddhism, leading to Tsong Khapa establish the Ganden Monastery. Since dharma is essential to the teachings of the sect, the whole layout of the monastery is built on its principles.
